Hi Mick: yes I agree, this is lacking in punch, but not necessarily contrast. 
 It seems you have exposed for the highlights here, as they appear to be closer 
to the mid-point of the typical contrast curve.  Faced with this image in 
Photoshop, I would adjust levels to lighten the highlights without graying out 
the shadow areas, basically trying to add 'sparkle'.  In paper printing, I 
would have switched to a grade or two higher, and exposed to retain detail in 
the highlights, letting the shadows fall where they will.

Just to be radical, I wonder whether the really great shot here might have been 
just the shadows and the slender trees you have placed in the background, 
excluding the distorted trunk you made the main subject? For example, moving to 
the left of the trunk and a few feet further back.  Did you try that?

Trying to not be negative, hope you don't mind.  I think honest comment is 
better, even though I know I personally find it hard to accept sometimes!
