I'm still not very convinced about the "too powerful" issue.
If the TTL circuit reacts fast enough to quench the emission at the right time you're 
fine. Right now, when I want to shoot something really close I simply use a large 
omnibounce card to reflect the flash light where I want it. You can see the effect in 
my "Orange" shot in a past PUG. It's an AF500FTZ so it's even more powerful than the 
280T...
