How did we lose the weight?  Just calorie counting (and discipline).
My wife, an accountant by profession, is scrupulous about keeping
track of just how many calories are in any any meal we prepare, and
also the amount of protein, carbohydrates, etc. in the total intake.
That's pretty much it; we limit ourselves to a particular number of
calories per day, but can pretty much choose what we like to get to
that limit. Of course it helps that we're in California, where there
is no problem getting a wide variety of fresh fruit and vegetables
year round.  Portion control (and not putting too many high-calorie
items on the plate at the same time) works for us; we occasionally
succumb to the lures of pizza (though not bacon cheeseburgers), and
we still enjoy a glass of wine with dinner on Sunday. We just don't
casually go out for a burger and a couple of pints at the local bar.
