Tanya, I'm glad to hear that you're doing as well as can be hoped. Keep your camera with you and document things when you can do so without putting yourself or others in hazard.
I understand what you're saying about it being nice there, and there being devastation just miles away. That's what it was like for me after the '89 quake, though the pockets of devastation were much smaller than with a flood.
