A quote from Timothy Allen:
"Put simply, the shorter the interval between each frame, the more
slowly the action will move in your film. Using the shadows and
clouds example again – clouds will almost definitely tend to move much
faster through the sky than a shadow cast by the sun will move across
a landscape. So, we normally set a shorter interval between shots
when time lapsing clouds, and a longer one when shooting the sun’s
path across the sky."

Before posting, I read that, and this:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Time-lapse

Being new to this, I imagined that focal length would play into the
equation somehow. That's why I asked about "relative movement of
subject in the frame". I imagined the end result would appear
jagged/jerky if the relative movement of the subject across the
picture was too fast. Tim Allen recommends to decrease shutter speeds
to introduce some blur between the frames, but I imagined that the
optimal shutter speed for a given speed of subject movement would vary
with focal length as well...

Perhaps I'm just thinking too complicated... :-)
