The best buy in longish Pentax glass is probably the A400/5.6. They sometimes
go for just a couple hundred. The M and K versions won't focus close enough for
bird or small animal photography unless used with a short extension tube.
Have you used yours on the K5 yet? I don't think I've used my A400/5.6 since
the K10.
Which is sad.
I've used it a couple of times with the K5. Purple fringing was somewhat of a
problem with this lens on earlier Pentax DSLRs. It seems less prone to that
with the K-5. Here's a pic I shot with it a couple of weeks ago. I like it
because it's light enough for handholding, yet has good reach and fairly close
focus capability.
If you're looking for long glass, you could do worse than the APO ones
from Sigma. I have the 400/5.6 APO Macro in Pentax AF mount, there's
also at least a 300/4 APO, and I think there are a couple of zooms in
the series, too. No sign of purple fringing on the *ist D or K10. I
don't have any newer Pentax bodies.
