no, i don't believe so
what i've done is let Google account holders join themselves, and
hand-subscribed those without (desire for) a Google account on request
when they email me; i don't require approval for membership, but i turn
on "Messages from new members are moderated" and then usually unmoderate
the users when they post their first convincing non-spam message (i keep
some members moderated if i am suspicious and don't knoe them); if you
want the content of the group to remain accessible only to members,
though, that approach won't work
