That 'really close' thing is also an issue with using the ring flash. I got the AF-160 to use with the 35 and I've had situations where the object was actually inside the ring-flash's mount. I solved that by putting a sheet of white paper beyond the subject where the flash would bounce off it. That happened in this shot ...

So yeah, mostly useless for bugs. Live or undrugged ones anyway.
