It was snowing heavily and blowing to the point that visibility was
almost zero when Lena got off work.

She made her way to her car and wondered how she was going to make
   it home.

She sat in her car while it warmed up and thought about her
situation. She remembered Ole's advice that if she got caught in a
blizzard, she should wait for a snow plow to come by and follow it.
That way she would not get stuck in a snow drift.

This made Lena feel much better and sure enough in a little while, a
snow plow went by, and she started to follow it. As she followed
the snow plow, she was feeling very smug as they continued, and she
was not having any problem with the blizzard conditions.

After quite sometime had passed, she was somewhat surprised when
the snow plow stopped and the driver got out and came back to her
car and signaled her to roll down her window.

The snow plow driver wanted to know if she was all right, as she had
been following him for a long time. She said that she was fine and
told him of Ole's advice to follow a snow plow when caught in a
   blizzard.

The driver replied that it was OK with him, and she could continue
if she wanted...but he was done with the Wal-Mart parking lot and
was going over to Kmart next.

Yes, reports here are that 1,000 cars got stuck in the jam on
northbound Lakeshore Drive. Tow trucks and plows are clearing the
mess now. There was also a jam and abandoned cars on southbound LSD
reported at 47th street. It's still closed now.
58,000 without power now, 178,000 have had power restored.
Sun is shining in the western suburbs now (11 AM).

I've been following updates from a friend in Chicago, whose husband
was stuck in traffic for 11 hours. He left work at 3pm, and from 5 pm
to 4am, he was stuck in snowy gridlock on LSD near North Ave. No sign
of city plows, assistance or rescue of any kind. If it weren't for
the residents of 1440 N Michigan, who rescued several stranded
motorists, he might still be out there. He waited in their lobby,
trying to catch a cab until 7am, then struck out towards Clark (Tyrone
the doorman had given him his hat!) to catch a bus home...

Snow has turned to freezing rain here. Ick.

It was expected to start at 3p, but it started a half hour early. Schools closed at 2p& they've already called a snow day for tomorrow. Last snowday in Chicago was 1999. We could get anywhere from 10 to 2 feet of snow.. Some are claiming we're going to get 2-3 inches per hour. Worst time will be 9p to 5am. Snowmobiles have been sent to the fire and police departments for rescue capability. We're under a blizzard warning until tomorrow at 3p. The winds are really starting to pick up. I have a feeling the winds will be
the worst part of the storm; Lake Michigan waves are supposed to be
enormous--I won't be able to get down there to photograph them.

Since we have a snow day tomorrow, I'll be free to try for some pictures. My big worry is power--sure hope it doesn't go out because I only have a snort or two of scotch in the house. We're having brats and baked beans for
dinner. May make some carrot cake. And a movie for sure.

Wish us luck! :-)
Big cheers, Christine from Chicago
