Don't want to diss your ruts, and maybe its just round here, but our
raccoons stroll around in small parties of two or three, usually.

In our mighty National Parks (I'm talking about BC, left end of
Canada) the raccoons are among the most dreaded of the wildlife.
Bastards will lurk in the bushes by your campsite, silent as anything,
and if you turn your back to a sausage or piece of pie or apple or
whatever on your picnic table, they'll be up on the table and back
into the bushes like lightning with whatever you thought you were
going to eat. Some decades ago I was out there with friends and we'd
been boozing a bit and damn if my buddy didn't catch a raccoon with
the corner of his eye making off with his steak. Fueled by alcohol
and rage, he hurled himself headlong after it into the bush from
whence emerged the most awful screaming and thrashing sounds, then
came back with his steak only slightly chewed, and a look of immense
satisfaction. -T
