But John, your answer is "sometimes", not "always".  Paul asked why you'd use 
an AF540 in manual mode, implying that he'd never take the camera out of "auto".

I certainly agree that it is just as important to know when the camera can do a 
better job than you, as it is to be able to effectively control things 
yourself, but the important thing is that it is the photographer making that 
decision.
