By the way, despite my complaints with the 540, I don't mean to imply that it 
is impossible to get good photos with it.  The problem is what you get for how 
much you pay. I often have better luck with promaster flashes that I paid less 
to buy, than I've paid to repair the AF540.

Then there is the case that mine has been in for repair at least three times.  
Fortunately the first two times were under warranty, so I only had to pay for 
it once.   It is absolutely critical that it be attached tightly to the hot 
shoe.  However, if you over tighten it, it'll break, and then it won't tighten 
at all.
