This comes from an attorney on one of my online discussion groups:

My stepmother was planning to visit her son in Florida last month, and
her children pleaded with her to fly instead of drive, as she'd
planned to do. "Mom, you're 82 years old, you don't need to be
driving by yourself 10 hours ..." Much grumping, but OK. Now she
hasn't flown since before 9/11, so her daughter is trying to educate
her -- no scissors, no liquids, you know the drill. "And Mom, take a
cane with you, OK?" "I don't need a cane." "Mom, please, you might
have to stand in line a long time, no telling how long you'll have to
be on your feet, just humor me, OK?" More grumping, but OK. On the
day, she grabs one of my dad's old canes from a stand near the front
door.

My wife drops her off at the airport, and about a half hour later she
gets a call. "I've been detained by TSA." "What? What on earth
for?" my wife asks. "That damn cane had a SWORD in it!"
