Last night I tried John's (I think it was John) suggestion about
clipping a light to the strobe to help aim it. While it seems to
help with aiming, when photographing musician in fairly low light,
shining a flashlight in their face while trying to set up the camera
seemed to be rather distracting and annoying.

Yeah. Sticking a 4D Maglight up there ain't indicated!

I suggested using one of those little single LED lights ... like the kind you carry on a key-chain in case you need to see the door-lock to insert your key when you come home at night and you've left the porch light off.

One AAA battery, one LED that doesn't put out a lot of light; duct-taped to the top of the strobe so it lines up and provides just enough illumination so you can see where the strobe is pointed.
