I agree with others, that Galia did it better!
I hope you don't mind that conclusion.
:-)

I think for both shots (but more so for yours), - it the brightness
of the background (OOF flowers) that plays the [distracting] role.

With your shot, it might be hard to change anything (because of lack of 
the spatial between the foreground and the background), 
but it might be done using a mask in Photoshop with Galia's shot.
In that shot, I would try to darken the background slightly.
This would make the front, in focus, flowers to "stand out" more.
Also, I'd play with the contrast and sharpness, - that may or may not be 
able to help to achieve that. Actually, "presence" in Lightroom may
provide a good handle on that (for both shots).
