I'm on your side Boris. I don't use them in every message, but occasionally I use emoticons or "pseudo-HTML-tags" to inject a bit of context into electronic messages in every venue I frequent, including at work. OTOH, at work, for example, the desire to put one into a message makes me think twice about whether I'm communicating my point appropriately. Techniques that can easily be misconstrued without an emoticon could indicate that I need to change my communication approach for that particular audience.
