If it's HTML, Thunderbird converted it back to plain text for me.

I can't see whether it's screwed up the HTML or not.

no, it's plain text all the way in this case ... my experiment suggests it's when _another_ list i'm on takes my plain text and subverts it to minimally marked-up HTML (it's not the smartest list software); then Thunderbird tries to interpret the // __ markup, but messes up sometimes
