Hi all!
Just wanted to give a heads-up to the San Francisco Bay-area contingent that
I'll be in the area near the end of the month. Seems a friend mine who lives
out there is hosting an event at the Olympic Club and has decided to hire me to
come out and take photos and possibly make some connections while I'm there.
:-D They're covering the travel and putting me up for the majority of my stay
there. Most likely, they'd be happy to put me up for the duration of my stay
there, but I really don't want to be an imposition on them -- being a
houseguest for more than three days.
There is always the remote possibility that they wouldn't mind you staying an
extra 2-3 days, you should talk to them about it.
I suppose there is that possibility, but I'm afraid that if I ask, even
if they do mind, they won't tell me. My single greatest concern in all
of this is that I not be an imposition to anyone. If that means not
taking a single photograph for my own pleasure the whole time I'm out
there, I'm fine with that. That three-day rule of thumb strikes me as a
pretty good guide as a way of protecting all parties from the little
indignities of being/hosting a guest in one's house for too long, and
while I know nothing is inviolable, I'm extremely loathe to press my
luck in this situation, as it could turn out to be a really big
opportunity for me down the road.
In any event -- here's my situation as things stand now. I'm scheduled to fly
in on the 23rd, and have lodging from then until the 27th. If I'm going to
stay for another couple of days, I'll need a place to crash on the 27th and
28th, and a ride to the airport (OAK) on the 29th. Is there anyone, or any
combination of folks, from the list in the area who would be willing and able
to accommodate me and tolerate my presence for that duration?
You are welcome to couch surf at the family estate, also known as the
Winchester Mystery Shack, and the Temple of deferred maintenance. But if you
plug travel directions into google maps for San Ramon to Felton, you'll see
that both places are on the outskirts of the bay area. Felton is about an hour
and a half drive to San Ramon, Oakland or San Francisco. San Ramon is about 40
minutes from San Jose or Oakland, and an hour from San Francisco.
Felton (Santa Cruz) would make a great day trip, or a place for you to stay for
one night, but you may want a more central location the night before you fly
out.
What sorts of things would you want to take photos of?
Thanks, Larry. I appreciate that.
But, before I do that, I want to be sure I'm not going to be an
imposition on you, just the same as I don't want to be one on the folks
who are flying me out there. I live out in the boonies myself, and
don't do a great deal of traveling. But, I do know from observing pop
culture over the course of my life that asking someone for the dreaded
"ride to the airport" is right up there with asking someone for a kidney
in many cases. And, inasmuch as these folks are kind enough to make
these arrangements for me, and I'm asking someone to host me in their
home and "by the way, may I have your other kidney", my preeminent goal
here is to make everything as easy as humanly possible on all involved.
If that means flying out of a different airport to make it easier -- SF
or San Jose, possibly -- awesome. I can do that.
As for what I want to take pictures of, that's easy: everything in the
world. People, places, landscapes, landmarks -- anything that is in the
area that makes for nice photos is good with me. The one thing to bear
in mind is that I won't have a great deal of cash, so admission prices
and such will have to be a consideration. But, if there's anything out
there that you can just go and take pictures of without having to yank
out the wallet, count me in.
So, there you have it. All I really want to do is take some photos, not
sleep on the street, and get home without wrecking someone's life in the
process. I know -- easier than it sounds. But, if it can be done, I'd
absolutely love to make it work out.
