First, historical background:
In Russia, the flagman institution in Physics education is
Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (MIPT), so-called
PhysTech. The main way of getting to it is by a suburban train
(about 25 minutes from the one of the main railway stations in Moscow).
The station where PhysTech is located is called "Novodachnaya".
A lot of people (students, faculty) usually get off at it in the
morning from 2 trains that arrive there between 8 and 9am.
The previous station, where seemingly nothing significant is located
(and usually much fewer people use it) called "Mark".
There is a legend that tells why that station is called that way.
One of the famous professors, Mark Aiserman (a world-reknown specialist
and an author of a textbook on analytical mechanics) was afraid to miss
his stop, and so, he was asking all the students and colleagues
who he saw entering the train to remind him about the station.
And since he was always taking the train at the same time, even the
train engineer knew that, and was announcing via PA system:
"Mark, the next station is Novodachnaya"
So, the previous station started being called "Mark".
