If you have a relatively well stocked photo store or department, you should be able to buy (cheaply) a filter wrench. They are made of a flexible plastic and been around as long as have filters. Also, a thin piece of rubber designed to help in opening jars, etc (check in your wife's misc. kitchen drawer) will allow a firm grip on the filter.
