There is such a thing as a filter wrench designed for this contingency. An alternative is to buy a large rubber "cork" whose diameter on the top or bottom flat is the same as the inside clearance on the front of the filter. Buying slightly oversize is an alternative. One approach is to press the flat of the rubber cork against the glass and then turn, a second is to place the larger flat of the rubber cork against the front rim of the filter and turn . . . YMMV
