Milwaukee has a pretty good Polish population as well. Two of the many bakeries doing paczkis are featured in this small gallery from the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. Just these two bakeries expect to produce somewhere around 105,000 paczkis.

Paul,
My grandma used to make them. Tey were never 'Bismarks', that's German!
And for a time, Chicago was reputed to have more Poles than any city
except Warsaw.
There is still a big immigrant community, now centered around Midway airport.

I grew up in Chicago. While my southside neighborhood was home to many Poles,
it was predominantly Irish. But Chicago was certainly a favorite destination of
Polish immigrants. So too, Detroit, particularly Hamtramck, which is a city
within the Detroit city limits that was once almost 100% first-generation
Polish and remains predominantly Polish. The Hamtramck bakeries provide most of
the Paczkis consumed on on the last day before lent. The city is is also home
to a number of great and inexpensive Polish restaurants. While the paczki has
polish roots, I think it's importance was magnified by the Detroit-area Polish
community. I don't recall ever seeing one during my 31 years in Chicago. The
closest thing to a paczki that I can recall were the jelly bismarcks that were
sold at Steffen's Bakery on 84th and Stony Island.

Yesterday was Kasmir Pulaski day here in Chicago.
Many schools had the day off. Chicago is a Polish city.
And I heard President Obama made him a citizen (only a couple of
hundred years late).
Not too bad for a Polish calvary officer who died at 34 helping our revolution.
