I've found that a better simulation is to switch from RGB to HLS mode,
then save the L (Lightness) layer as the BW image.  It seems better to
me in the sense of more closely matching what I typically see in a BW
print w.r.t. the grays that colors get "mapped" to.

Every try doing it on a 600+ dpi laser printer?  Probably couldn't do
much better than a 150-line screen, that way, though.  But there won't
be a color cast! :-)
