try backing off just a bit from the subject, as this will
increase DOF greatly, and still give you a lot more negative to
enlarge from than 35mm. I found this was what I needed to do
when shooting model cars with 35mm, as I couldn't get enough DOF
to get them in focus front to back either.
Or, get a view camera and learn about DOF control using camera
movements.
