This is the paragraph that puzzles me:

approaching the 1,000 short-term fatalities stemming from Friday's
earthquake and tsunami. "


I suspect he means "known". Not the only poorly-concocted (in fact, downright wrong) sentence in that article. It falls sadly short of the usual BBC standards.
