Richard, I'm not an airshow anorak (geek), but most years the tv company I work for covers the Royal International Air Tattoo at RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire (pr: Glos'tur'sher) and accordingly I have filmed at it many times. Without doubt, it is the biggest military airshow of the summer, possibly in Europe. It has spent two years at RAF Cottesmore (not Cottysmore, sadly) while the Fairford runway has been resurfaced - it is a nominated Shuttle landing station, that is - a designated location for the NASA space shuttle to use in an emergency. So the Tatto is back at Fairford this year (usually about 3rd weekend in July) and should be a good one. However, it *is* big (and I do mean BIG) with lots of military aircraft from all over the world. Most of it new, with some historical aspect. You mention vintage aircraft, and there are soem smaller, perhaps better shows suited to your interest. One that strikes me in particular is the 'Flying Legends' show held at RAF Duxford every year - usually mid July. This show is purely vintage, and there are some fantastic opportunities for photography. I once rigged a minicam in the cockpit of a Mark 4 Spitfire (sadly the pilot declined my offer to squat down behind his seat while he displayed....) and just touching the thing, I could literally feel the history - quite overwhelming. So, you won't find any C5 Galaxys at this show, but you will find a (IMO) more pleasant atmosphere with lots of trade stands selling anythign and everything, and good access to parked aircraft, and the flying has to be seen to be believed. The sight and sounds of half a dozen Spits chasing an ME-109 across English countryside is second only to a shuttle launch, and even then I have my doubts... Website is worth a look: http://www.iwm.org.uk/duxford/airshow.htm If you're passing near Oxford, gimme a shout.
