I doubt that the soldier who supplied the data was seriously committed to any cause. From what I've read, seriously disturbed sounds much more likely. And what cause might he be devoted to? Chaos? Whatever his motive, he probably thought he would get away with it. I doubt that he meant to throw his life away.
