When I use white seamless I *try* to blow out the background.  And if I don't 
in the camera, I often do in post, using the dodge/burn tools.  That's also how 
I get rid of ugly things in the background with a dark background.

Please share what you learn.  I haven't done it a lot either, and I'm sure that 
you'll learn things I haven't figured out yet.

if I want to soften shadows, I'll often put the fill close to on axis of the 
camera.

If you have a flashlight, it might not have the exact beam shape of your 
flashes, but it's probably close enough to fake as a modeling light, at least 
until you're rich enough to buy one.  Or you could just take a picture, just 
using that one strobe, and see where it's light goes.
