Look its a good photo to start with - the color and lightening to the BW is subtle and nice... I like either of those a bit better than the full color - but it is a nice unaffected shot whatever you do with it.

That type of photo manipulation isn't my normal style, which I guess is a good 
reason to try it.  And I forgot to thank you for the suggestion. Suggestions 
for things that I wouldn't normally do is exactly the reason that I post photos 
to the list.

I think my favorite version of the photo is still the plain B&W.
I'm inclined to agree. In the new, manipulated version, the color of
the "whites" of the eye make him appear jaundiced. I realize it's
probably the same as the color version, where it looks fine, but the
B&W face accentuates the warm color of the eyeball.

Good point.  I just tweaked the color balance and did a little work on exposure 
compensation, dodging and burning.
I think I dialed this version in a little better, and learned a bit more about 
the limitations of my skill in photo manipulation.
