As a completely neutral observer, I think something in between the two versions would work.

The lighter shadows bring out some color and texture from the shadow side of the rock. But it seems the brightly lit areas get a bit brighter as well.

Perhaps, lighten the shadows about half as much without boosting the brightness of the rest of the image.

My $0.02 as long as I don't have to do any of the work.

I really don't know in what way you see your version different from
what I stated. I did another quick images exchange and to me, your
"do" is still flatter due to your having lightened the shadows. As I
initially stated, I prefer more depth.
