I'll bite on the "dog" part, as I've got the 55/1.8 as well as various 50's from 2.0 to 1.4. Wide open it's soft, stopped down it seems purty near as good as any. The thing touted about this lens, is with the old K body viewfinders, the 55 looks "exactly" life-sized. Which it does, and which I could care less about.
