...And there were also SMC ("K") 50mm lenses (50/1.2, 50/1.4) that
were being sold at the same time as the 55's (even before the M
lenses came out).  I guess that the "premium" lenses were the faster
50/1.2 and 50/1.4, while the "garden variety" normals were the
55/1.8 and 55/2.

As an aside, it's too bad that today's "garden variety" lenses
aren't built to the same standards as the K 55/1.8.  But I
digress...
