Glad I could point you in the right direction. Hope you got some keepers.
West of Vegas is a place called 'Red Rocks' - not as big a place as 'Valley'
but still has some decent shooting opportunities.
And remember to be quiet about these places - we don't want too many people
discovering them -SHHH

Valley of Fire is awesome. I hiked out to see the petroglyphs and came
back. It was about 110 deg. I burn easy so I had on a light long sleeve
shirt and hat but my face still looked like a lobster!

Mitch - thanks for looking & commenting.
As for the black backgrounds with the leaves - they were taken at the
crack of dawn with my back to the rising sun - I spotmetered the
brightest spots on the leaves, letting the background go dark. Same for
the ridgeline ('North Face of Denali'?) - in Photoshop I then made sure
the dark side became completely dark.
HTH.
And by the way, next time in Vegas you've got to take the time to visit
'Valley of Fire' State Park about an hour or so north of the city - in
spots, its other worldly.

VERY nice gallery! How did you get the black backgrounds on some of the
photos, like the one of the leaves, and along the ridge line??? I love
it.
...and yes, "ancient Chinese secret" is a valid answer <g>...

Ann:
I used to go to Vegas for a yearly networking (computer) trade show.
The last 3 years that I went, I went on the Friday before the show.
Arrived and went to Utah for the weekend. I stumbled on Zion the first
year (without my cameras) but turned those weekends into photo
excursions for the last 2. Hence, I haven't been to everything I want
to see (Canyonlands and Arches).
What's Capitol Reef all about? As I recall, it didn't capture my
imagination when I heard about it all those years ago ...
Well for one it doesn't have Kadak tripod hole locations & the crowds
that go with it, so you can pretty much have the place to yourself -
I've been there 3 times, mainly in early spring and have never been
bothered by crowds - heck there were days in the park I never saw
another person.

I have a slew of 'em myself... We might have passed each other on a

You didn't meniotn Canyonlands or Arches -- was that just for the
sake of brevity?

Thanks for the input. I had SAMs Club convert a couple hundred
slides that I shot in the early 90's; with my ME & MX. This was one
of them. I'm planning to post these as GESO(s). I have photos from
Zion, Bryce, Cedar Breaks, Kodachrome Basin and Rocky Mountain N.P.
You are right ... southern Utah is one of my FAVORITE places!

I particularly like the Zion shot... wonderful BW conversion...
and - well hell, it's one of my favorite places.
The other two are certainly well done, but don't say much to me...
too much just like an exercise in technique.

Tried sending this last night but it never was posted to the
list. Let's try it again...
After a long, cold winter of working on my photo album webpage and
associated management utilities; I have a bunch of stuff from 2010
and 2011 to post. In the near future I hope to post a couple of
GESOs and more PESOs.
For now, here are 3 PESOs that didn't fit into any galleries, I
guess they are just photos in my photo "shoebox"...
