Is there a program that will convert the files to the ones that IMovie

Here's one that every professional editor I know of has on his/her system:
Mpeg Streamclip:

Yes, I just finished playing around with that tonight and I'm quite
impressed with it. Especially so since it solved a big problem we were
having. Turns out that iMovie and iDVD between them cannot author a
standard 4:3 DVD with a letterboxed 16:9 movie on it. Simply refuses. IT
either squishes the 16:9 or stupidly crops the sides.
But if you export the 16:9 video from iMovie from MPEG Streamclip with
Aspect 4:3 and Zoom X/Y of 1.333, you get your vid at 16:9 perfectly
letterboxed in a 4:3 container!
Two thumbs up. Excellent utility.
