I did something like that, Godfrey - but there was an option on the "Metadata" menu, when
the affected files were selected, to simply "Update DNG Preview and Metadata".
Did I break anything by doing it that way? It *looks* like all of my info is
still there...
It sounds like your way involves a lot more fiddly disc activity, but if
there's a better reason to do it that way I'm all ears!

Well I followed Godfrey's method and my unknowns dropped to 756 from
over 4800 (out of over 25000 images). Slow process though; lots of file
ops. I confirmed that the remaining unknowns are various m42's I've
shot with, and virtual copies of DNGs.
