What a coincidence: It was two days ago that I acquired my KX, which had the same strap. My strap is narrow dark-gray cloth webbing with a broader black Pentax shoulder pad. Once you open the hinge, push the webbing here and you'll eventually figure out which part of it to push to create slack and which part to tug to take up the slack by doubling up on the length.
I have a couple Leica straps that work this way, but the Leicas lack the cool hinged lock and don't let me make the strap nearly as short. I like to follow Keppler's advice and keep the camera hanging against my chest--less bounce, quicker on the draw. The Pentax delivers. I doubled up so much length I had to stuff the ends under the shoulder pad's flap and keep it in place with black electrical tape. I have never seen one of these things before, and have no idea what the correct way to thread a strap through it is.
