I got it to work (using Windows 7, Firefox, Excel 2007):

Highlight the table in Firefox and copy to clipboard (Ctrl-C)
Select cell A1 in Excel
Click the drop-down arrow below "Paste" in the "Home" tab of Excel's ribbon
Select "Paste special..."
Select "Text", OK

It pasted as 14 rows, 4 columns, instead of the single line like regular paste.

I don't know how closely this will correspond to Excel on the Mac.
