I'd like nothing better than to get rid of comcast and my cable modem. So I've been thinking about buying a 4G wireless hotspot and using Verizon as my ISP. Verizon has said 4G wireless is available in my area. Is anyone doing this? Is the technology ready to replace cable internet? Are the pioneers taking arrows?
i was at Drupalcamp Colorado last weekend and in the middle of the first day the sitewide wireless went down with a thud; in each of the two sessions i attended during the outage, someone handed the presenter their MiFi (verizon 4G device) or sharing-enabled iPhone to save the day (the presentations should not have been dependent on an internet connection, but that's another story)
however inside a classroom on a local campus the signals were not all that strong, so both presentations had significant network delays; in one case someone took the MiFi outside the classroom and held it as high as he could against a window in order to get a good enough signal to keep the presentation going
so they work, and they are handy, but i think it would be frustrating to rely on one
