In the US, the two dominant technologies for home Internet service are
DSL and cable modems. DSL operates over the telephone wires, and so is
often provided by the telephone company. Cable modems operate over the
wiring for cable television, and so that service is normally provided
through the cable television provider. If Mark's getting a cable
modem, it wouldn't have anything to do with his telephone wiring or
service.
