why would you want it to? it's much easier to read shorter lines; this, in fact, is one of the reasons i chose Thunderbird -- some control over the tendency toward unreadably long lines

as with most things Thunderbird, though, there's a way to tweak it, but it's a geeky way; the short answer it to set mail.compose.wrap_to_window_width to "true"

the long answer is that to reach this setting go to Preferences > Advanced > General, then click "Config Editor..."; you will find more settings than you want to believe exist, but by typing "wrap" into the filter area you will see just a few; resist the temptation to fiddle with the others, just set mail.compose.wrap_to_window_width to "true" by double-clicking the appropriate line, then close the window and try composing a message
