Hi All,
During the weekend of July 4th, I was at a big annual dance event:
Austin Blues Party. While shooting dancers, I played with an
interesting effect of combining the ambient light with the flash.
I found that with the K7, the optimum way to do that was to
set the exposure at ~ -1 - -1.8 step in "M" mode - per the built in
exponometer, set in the center-weighted mode. (about 0.3 - 0.4 sec,
f/4.0 - 5.0, ISO 400-800.)
The flash (Metz 58) was set to "A" setting.
I discussed some earlier attempts:

but this time I had a chance to play more. Plus the lights around were
more interesting (variety of lights), but more challenging (a lot of
background lights - that sometimes would show "through" the moving
person: http://42graphy.org/swing/abp-2011/selected/_IR31411.html ).
Basically, I was trying to achieve two goals:
1. Combine a nice clear photo of the dancers (Without High-ISO-related
artifacts) with the nice "moody" ambience.
(We've been discussing this with Larry a few times.)
Larry, you may want to try this, if you like it.
2. In some cases catch the added motion blur (as a shadow-tail)
The trailing curtain sync was working slightly better for this (and
probably even for the first) purpose.
Here are some interesting results:

For comparison:
This shot was taken with the exposure settings just about 0.5 step
under, hence a more pronounced blur and the red cast that I slightly
shifted toward orange, to have more natural skin color.
(Larry, - this is done with the HSL slider in LR)
And one of the most interesting shots (although the blur effect discussed
above shows only in the background):

Let me know what you think (and don't hesitate to provide constructive
criticism): what works and what doesn't quite work for you.
I am still "on the fence" with some of the shots myself.
Igor
Very cool shots, Igor, but the best one overall, the most effective, is
31107. The winning formula for me is: subject is sharp and stopped
(possibly with trails), but everything else is whirling around the
subject as formless, streaked or blurred shapes.
