Interesting, let the flash set the exposure.  I've always done it PTTL.

This is exactly why I carry a gel holder loaded with a CTO gel in my camera 
bag. I'm impressed that your backgrounds don't all look straw colored.

I'd do the color balance by trying white points on the black, on metal or the 
white.
