Part is local,John. Governor Perdue gave us in NC the nation's third
highest gas tax at 35 cents per gallon
Bill
If taxes went up the governor didn't do it by herself. I'd be surprised
if she's even allowed to blow her nose without the legislature's
approval? Legislature in NC keeps the governor on a *short* leash.
Looked it up now that you mentioned it.
Prices around here dropped $0.34 a gallon during June. Tax went up by
$0.025 (two & a half cents) on July 1. Gas price was back up a nickle
that day. I'm seeing gas prices increased by $0.24 per gallon since then.
WUNC radio says we've got the thirteenth highest gas tax, although based
on an American Petroleum Institute map I found, we're 10th highest.
And according to the NC Petroleum and Convenience Marketers, during the
first week of July prices in Virginia and Georgia (who did NOT raise
their gas taxes) went up about a nickle more than prices did here in NC
with the higher tax.
Go figure.
Plus, the NC sales tax went down by a penny the same day the gas tax
went up - but I don't reckon Bev Perdue gets to claim credit for that
any more than she deserves blame for the gas tax going up.

Not a rant yet, just curious.
After shooting up for the first six months of this year gasoline prices
around here dipped back a week or so before the 4th of July weekend, but
have since recovered back almost to their previous high levels. Admittedly
it's subjective based on the prices I'm paying at the pump.
Prices were up around 31% since the first of the year during the week after
GFM, dropped back to only 20% higher by the 4th, but are now back around 30%
higher today.
Anyone else seeing this? Or is it a purely local phenomenon?
And, going back almost one year (to July 18, 2010) prices are 40% higher
today.
