Ouch- best of luck to your son. I know the feeling, I did something similar, but not quite as serious. I fell on my back on frozen soil, and pretty much pulverized my T9 vertebra. The doc explained that if I was going to mash a vertebra, it was a good choice, as it had a pair of ribs to stabilize it. At first, all they fed me was jello, and then had the nerve to get upset that I wasn't having a bowel movement. (Didn't recall when I had my last bowel movement, they were afraid my intestines were paralyzed.) Still won't touch jello. It healed up well, and I'm about half an inch shorter now.
