Thank you, Bulent! Though, some credit has to go to the lens, since it's allowed me to try shots that I never would've tried otherwise, while at the same time, forces me to be more patient and attentive to composition.

Now that I've started using the old glass, I've come to the conclusion that every DSLR ought to come with a manual prime instead of a short zoom as a kit lens. Of course, they probably wouldn't sell as many cameras that way.
