I've gotten my best sunset shots by shooting when the sun is partially set or even after the sun has set but the sky is still lingering red... It's not the sun that you want after all, but the dramatic effects of the red sun in the clouds etc. I had a friend who used to shoot sunsets of lighthouses along lake Michigan - back in the film days - and he liked nothing better than a good 15 to 20 minute exposure after sunset on Velvia. The film gobbled up the remaining light, shifted color due to reciprocity failure, and produced some really stunning images.

I guess reciprocity failure is a thing of the past now...
