Thanks for the hints, Bruce! I've marked this email for future reference.
I took another whack at it last night using Picasa's "Retouch"
function. It was a little tedious, and the results were less than
stellar, but I do think it was a bit of an improvement. Here's the attempt:

I think the area looks muddy compared to the surrounding bokeh, but at
least the highlight is knocked down a little. I'm sure it would've come
out better using Photoshop, but Picasa offers simplicity at the expense
of meticulousness.
Thanks again for the input. I've really got to learn to use more of
Photoshop's functionality and this will help.

Walt, as I have shots with the same issue and I wanted to see how hard
it is to fix, I took the liberty of attempting to tweak your pic.
Here's my quick and dirty result:
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2254722/mimosa-walt.jpg
It's a bit over smudged. If I took a bit more care (and was a better
artist!) it'd be more convincing. But it's enough to prove it's not
too hard to do.
Here's what I did in Ps (CS5):
- create new blank layer
- choose a soft Brush (0% hardness), opacity 100%, flow 10%
- Option-click (Alt-click) over a nearby bokeh colour (to set the
painting colour)
- lightly paint arcs and circles over the offending white area
- rechoose the painting colour (Option/Alt-click) frequently to get
varied texture
I also did a little cloning with the clone brush set similarly (with
Sample all Layers set), just to get a bit better texture.
I ran a Gaussian blur pass over the painted and cloned layer to smooth
my fixes out a bit, and reduced the opacity of the layer a smidge (90%
or so) to get a nicer blend.

Thanks, Ken.
If I ever figure out how to fix it without ruining it, I'll post the
results.

Would be a wonderful capture if it wasn't for the bright white spot

Hi all,
I grabbed this shot this evening while I was walking around in the
front yard this evening. All but about a dozen or so blossoms are
gone on this tree, and I just happened to catch this one out of
the corner of my eye from a pretty good distance -- say, 25 feet
give or take. And it looked like a good bokeh opportunity.
Again, I had the K-50/1.4 on the K-x:

ISO 560, 1/500 sec, f/3.5, Manual
Any input appreciated. So do as you will.
You're making up for time spent not taking pictures, another keeper.
Best,
Walt
