The K1000 was, to a large degree, a Spotmatic with a bayonet mount. It was made for over 20 years, very reliable, cheap and a favorite with photography instructors. It was a great "first camera". This is why so many were sold. If anything, it was too sucessful, because it gave Pentax the reputation of making entry level cameras. The ME and ME Super were also very popular, but a little too cute for their own good. A lot of people thout that when they got serious about photography, and wanted a "serious" camera they had to get a different brand. Pentax's serious cameras were somewhat overlooked. Pentax did fine until the P&S, AF cameras came out. People who wanted decent, sharp, properly exposed, exposed, low effort pictures didn't have to bother with SLR's or fix lens rangefinders any more. (The equivalent of today's P&S was Kodak's Instamatic cameras which were little more than simple box cameras with drop in film loading.) It took very little time for fixed lens rangefinders and many SLR brands to dissapear. My personal vote for most under-rated Pentax is the Program Plus. Very nice camera, but sells for around the same price as the MG on eBay.
