More elements and groups doesn't necessarily mean a "better" optic.
There are many factors involved, including the type of glass used,
coatings, design of the elements/groups, and so forth. The M lenses
were "downsized" and so may need more elements to come up to the quality
of the equivalent K lens - and, as it has been argued, the K lenses in
general are better optically than the M lenses. The proof, of course, is
in the photograph, not the spec sheets.
