Never heard it called white space. I am familiar with negative space.

In landscape photography, blank sky is something to be avoided/minimized.
In this particular image I felt it was something to be minimized.

art/composition it is usually called "negative space". It's not
something I came up with.

The negative space (sky) in the building photo that started this
thread helps to make the building height look more imposing than it
would if it was cropped out (IMHO).
